Queen’s Park: Newmarket-Aurora MPP Frank Klees tabled a Motion in the Ontario Legislature that calls on the Ontario Government to preserve on-site 24/7 personal support services for seniors and people with disabilities who reside in York Region’s assisted living residences.

The Motion reads as follows:

Mr. Klees – That, in the opinion of this House, the Government of Ontario should re-instate the on-site 24/7 personal support services for seniors and people with disabilities who reside in York Region’s assisted living residences;

That the Central Local Health Integration Network be directed to commission an independent review of the proposed change from an on-site care model to the proposed hub-and-spoke service model and the impact on the level and quality of care, the financial and capacity implications to other health care services such as EMS and local hospitals and the feasibility of retaining on-site 24/7 personal support services in specified supportive housing residences in addition to the proposed hub-and-spoke service delivery model that would serve the broader community.

“I’m hoping that the Minister of Health will recognize that the government’s plans to cut the on-site 24/7 personal support services that vulnerable seniors and people with disabilities have come to depend on, is wrong-headed and will put lives at risk,” said Klees.  “This is the last place government should be looking to cut costs.”

Klees confirmed that if the government does not agree to re-instate the on-site services before May 8th, the Motion will be debated on that day and will be put to a vote that afternoon.

“I’m hopeful that the Minister will realize the importance of keeping this essential support service in place and announce that she will reverse the decision to cut that service. If not, I will proceed with the Motion and hopefully the majority of the legislature will vote to send a strong message to the Minister of Health that these important services must be kept in place for the most vulnerable in our communities.”
