KLEES: Filipino Independence Day Celebrates
Vision of Freedom and Self-Determination
(Queen's Park) Oak Ridges MPP Frank Klees, the PC Education and Citizenship & Immigration Critic, today made the following statement on the occasion of the Philippine Declaration of Independence:
" On June 12, 1898, General Emilio Aguinaldo, later the first president of the Philippines , proclaimed the sovereignty and independence of the Philippines from the colonial rule of Spain following the Battle of Manila Bay.
"Today at Queen's Park and around the world, the tricoloured flag of the Philippines is being raised in honour of this event to celebrate the bravery and courage of the Filipino people in their struggle to obtain their rightful place alongside the democratic, free and sovereign nations of the world.
"The colourful vibrancy of Filipino culture is today an integral part of the Canadian multicultural mosaic and so the historic events of June 12 th in Kawit are also part of our mutually shared international heritage.
"On behalf of Ontario PC Leader John Tory, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the many ongoing contributions to Ontario by our Filipino-Canadian Community and offer best wishes and congratulations on the anniversary of Filipino Independence Day!" Mabuhay Angh Filipinas!
