KLEES: Top Marks for Aurora !
(Queen’s Park) Today in the Legislature, Newmarket-Aurora MPP Frank Klees recognized his home town of Aurora for its leadership in road safety through seat belt use.
The former Minister of Transportation acknowledged Aurora's compliance rate of 98% as the highest among all York Region municipalities as reported by York Region Police. The results were based on the 2007 Spring Seatbelt Campaign which is again being launched today.
"The compliance rate among all York Region drivers is above the provincial average of 93% but unfortunately there are still those who are putting themselves and others at risk by not buckling up," said Klees. "I want to congratulate the 98% of Aurorans who have made it a habit to buckle up and am hopeful that this year, we can achieve a 100% rate of compliance – not only in Aurora, but in all York Region Municipalities!”
Klees thanked the Ontario Safety League, St. John Ambulance and the York Region Police Services for their relentless efforts to increase awareness of the importance of wearing seat belts.
The cost of not buckling up is a $110 fine and 2 demerit points and, possibly, serious injury or death.
