Klees Wants Operators of Unsafe School Buses Named
(Queen’s Park) Newmarket-Aurora MPP Frank Klees called on the Minister of Transportation to release the names of operators whose school buses were pulled off the road during a two-week safety blitz.
"Every parent should have the confidence that their child's school bus is safe and that the driver is qualified," said Klees. "The fact that 12 school buses were pulled off the road during a two week inspection blitz by the Ministry of Transportation is unacceptable."
Klees questioned the government's press release in which it gave 'top marks' to Ontario school buses following the safety blitz. "How can the Ministry of Transportation say all is well when 92 buses were cited for requiring repairs and 12 buses were pulled right off the road?" said Klees. “We should be demanding 100% compliance with safety standards and settle for nothing less.”
Klees faults the Ministry of Education for under-funding school boards for student transportation. "The government and school boards have ignored warnings that under-funding of transportation is threatening the safe operation of school buses. Hopefully, this will be a wake-up call for the government and the school board."
While he called on the government to ensure school bus operators are properly funded so that they can properly maintain their equipment, Klees maintains there is no excuse for operators to run buses that are a threat to children's safety.
