KLEES: Good for Toronto !
Now, What About the Rest of the Province?
(Queen's Park) PC Education Critic Frank Klees welcomed today's announcement that $4 million would be made available to keep some Toronto schools open for the summer, but asked why the rest of the province has been left out.
"Making school facilities available for programs throughout the summer months is the right thing to do," said Klees. "What's wrong about this is that, once again, this government is forgetting that the need for summer programs for kids is just as critical outside of Toronto ."
Klees is calling on the McGuinty government to make the same funding available to boards across the province where similar needs exist.
"Why would the Toronto school boards be treated any differently from York Region, Ottawa , Windsor or Thunder Bay ?" said Klees. "The same programs that will be offered to kids in Toronto should be made available throughout the province. Surely it shouldn't take another tragedy to get this government's attention."
"Now's the time to put those programs in place where we don't yet have violence in our schools or on the streets, to provide young people an opportunity for a positive focus for their energy."
Klees insists every school board in the province should be given the opportunity to submit applications for funding of summer programs.
"I will be interested to hear Dalton McGuinty's explanation for ignoring kids just because they don't live in Toronto !"
