The Lessons of the Holocaust Must Never Be Forgotten
( Queens ' Park) Oak Ridges MPP Frank Klees, the PC Critic for Education and Citizenship & Immigration today issued the following statement:
"The Ho locaust refers to a specific event in history; namely, the state-sponsored, systematic persecution and annihilation of European Jewry by the Nazis and their collaborators between 1933-1945. During that period, six million Jewish Ho locaust victims were murdered.
"As a legislator, it was my privilege to support the Holocaust Memorial Day Act brought forward by my colleague, the MPP for Halton, Ted Chudleigh. The Act received Royal Assent and was proclaimed into law in Ontario in 1998. At that time, Ontario became the first jurisdiction outside of Israel to establish the commemoration of Yom HaShoah, the day of the Holocaust, as an annual one in accordance with the lunar Hebrew Calendar. As a result, Yom HaShoah is and always will be an official day of observance by the entire Province of Ontario .
"Yom HaShoah provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the enduring lessons of the Holocaust and to continue to meet the challenge of the ongoing process of education about them.
"At this solemn time, we also commemorate the individuals who opposed the overwhelming forces of evil to save Jews and other victims of the Nazis and their collaborators, including the Swedish Ambassador to Hungary , Raoul Wallenberg and the German Reformed Pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer as well as others whose names and feats of heroism are inscribed at Yad Veshem in Israel .
