Klees: Wynne's Message to Board Contradictory
"Either Ms Wynne believes she was wrong then, or she believes she is wrong now" said PC Education Critic Frank Klees in response to the newly minted Education Minister's announcement tha t she is obligated to order the Dufferin-Peel School Board to comply with the Education Act and balance their budget.
Klees cited Wynne's refusal to do just that when she was a trustee in the TDSB and in fact launched a legal challenge against the section of the Act tha requires Boards to balance their budgets.
"This new Education Minister finds herself in a major conflict from the outset," said Klees. "Does she really believe that the cuts she is demanding are in the best interest of students, or does she still believe the notion that cuts are "crimes against children" as she referenced in 2002?
Klees points to the fact that the deficits school boards are facing are in large part brought on by wha t he terms irresponsible spending, unworkable and impractical policies such as the hard cap on classroom sizes that have forced school boards to take on costs without the requisite funding from the province.
"When Ms Wynne was a trustee in 2002 she railed against the government of the day for what she called a flawed funding formula . Her government has been in office for three years and nothing has been done to update the funding formula . The blame game is wearing thin," charged Klees.
