Frank Klees, the Progressive Conservative MPP from Oak Ridges,
will be one of the prominent politicians from the GTA to sign
the giant yellow ribbon at the Canadian Forces booth at the Canadian
National Exhibition, today August 18 at 3:30 p.m. The Yellow Ribbon
campaign will be officially launched tomorrow, August 19, as part
of the annual Veterans' Day celebrations at the CNE. The Yellow
Ribbon initiative has been mounted by the Canadian Forces as part
of its "Connecting with Canadians" campaign to remind Canadians
of the important role the Canadian Forces play, both overse as
and at home.
"I have always believed
that we rarely acknowledge the important roles tha t the men and
women of the Canadian Forces play at home and abroad and the sacrifices
they and their families make for all of us", Mr. Klees explained.
"I wanted to sign the Yellow Ribbon as a personal sign of gratitude
and I decided to sign it before its official launch in order to
draw attention to the campaign and encourage my constituents and
all residents of the GTA to visit the Canadian Forces booth at
the CNE to sign the Yellow Ribbon themselves."
Formal invitations to
sign the "Yellow Ribbon" were sent out to leading municipal, provincial
and federal politicians in the GTA. Members of the public are
also being invited to sign the "Yellow Ribbon" when they attend
the CNE this year. The campaign organizers are hoping for at least
100,000 signatures during the run of the CNE.
Klees a lso s aid: "I
am honoured to be one of the community leaders asked to sign the
Yellow Ribbon. This is not a political statement in support of
any particular mission abroad. It's simply a unique opportunity
to show our support for our troops in the very difficult and often
dangerous tasks tha t they have been assigned. "
The Canadia n Forces
booth where the Yellow Ribbon is housed is located just inside
the Princess Gates of the CNE. The Yellow Ribbon will be available
for signature by members of the public from August 19 to closing
