Klees: World Teachers' Day celebrates crucial role of teachers and teaching excellence in education process
(Queen's Park) Oak Ridges MPP Frank Klees, the PC Education and Citizenship & Immigration Critic, today made this statement on World Teachers' Day:
"In 1994, UNESCO declared October 5 th as international World Teachers' Day to commemorate its Recommendations regarding the Status of Teachers (1966) and the Status of Higher Education Teaching Personnel (1997).
"In so doing, UNESCO underlined in a special way the crucially important role that teachers have in the education system and the process of international socio-economic development and progress through learning. This is why World Teachers Day is a national holiday in Taiwan while others have declared other days on which to honour their teachers (Brazil, October 15 th , India, September 5 and Brunei September 23).
"Today all Ontarians are afforded an opportunity to remember their special teachers who had the greatest impact on their lives with their thoughts, advice and personal example. We pay special tribute to the role of our teachers and acknowledge their teaching excellence in Ontario 's education system that is the foundation of our society's cohesive multicultural character, compassionate social values and our economic well-being.
"Every Ontario child has the right to a quality education. On World Teachers' Day, we celebrate the many great teaching professionals who ensure that our children enjoy that right which opens to them the future doors of many life opportunities.
"On behalf of John Tory, and the entire Ontario PC Caucus, I join with all Ontarians in celebrating and paying tribute to our teachers."
