Klees: Yom Kippur Judaism's Great Holy-Day
( Queens ' Park) Oak Ridges MPP Frank Klees, the PC Critic for Education and Citizenship & Immigration today issued the following statement on the High Holy-Day of Yom Kippur:
"Yom Kippur or the 'Day of Atonement,' is probably the most important Holy-Day of Judaism. It is a day set aside by Jews for prayer and fasting to repent of sin and make amends to G-d and His Divine judgement.
"It is a complete Sabbath and no work can be performed on this day, including a full and complete fast from all eating and drinking until nightfall. Most of the holiday is spent in the synagogue where Yom Kippur services end at nightfall with the blowing of the 'Tekiah Hashanah' or a long blast from the shofar.
"The wearing of white is customary on Yom Kippur to symbolize that G-d will make our sins as white as snow (Isaiah 1:18; Psalm 51). Others wear the 'kittel' or the white robe in which the dead are buried.
"On this solemn holy-day of Judaism, and on behalf of the Ontario PC Caucus, I extend my best wishes to all members of our Jewish Community here in Canada and to the world-wide Jewish Community in the Diaspora and in Eretz Israel .
