KLEES: York Region Should Prioritize Transit Services for Seniors
and People with Disabilities
(QUEEN’S PARK) In a letter to the Chair of York Region, Bill Fisch, Newmarket-Aurora MPP Frank Klees, the PC Critic for Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal, called on the Region to prioritize wheelchair accessible bus services as part of its spending plans with respect to the $7.8 million of additional year-end funding that was recently announced by the provincial government.
Klees pointed out that lack of transportation services for people with disabilities and residents of long-term care homes was one of the key issues raised by participants at a recent meeting he hosted at the Aurora Resthaven Long-Term Care Residence.
Participants, which included residents of long term care homes, administrators and health care workers, pointed out that it is impossible to get residents to and from activities in the community. The result is that residents’ physical activity is limited and their quality of life suffers.
“This is an opportunity to improve the quality of life of our seniors and people with disabilities. The funding is there. Now it’s a matter of prioritizing and providing for their needs,” said Klees.
