Klees to Premier: Practice What You Preach

(Queen’s Park) Newmarket-Aurora MPP Frank Klees today took the under-funding of York Region health care services directly to the Premier.

Klees pointed out the hypocrisy of the so-called "Fairness Resolution" tabled by the Premier which calls on the federal government to "ensure Ontario is treated fairly” with respect to funding of the health care system. Klees seized the opportunity to point out that the McGuinty government is shortchanging York Region in most areas of health care funding.

"When compared to the other health care regions across Ontario, our local hospitals are underfunded by more than $290 million each year," said Klees.

"When compared to the other 14 designated health care regions in the province, we in York Region are the 4th lowest funded for homecare services, we are the 4th lowest funded for mental health, the lowest funded for addiction services and the 3rd lowest funded for long-term residential care for our seniors.”

Klees asked the Premier if he would apply the same "principle of fairness" - which the Premier wants the federal government to adopt - to himself and his minister of health.

"Rather than pointing the finger at Ottawa, the Premier should practice what he's preaching and implement a population-based funding model. It's the only way to put a stop to the under-funding of services here in York Region," said Klees.
