As promised, I am confirming that the following steps were taken today in follow-up to yesterday's (March 9th ) public meeting:

1) I advised Mr. Robert Prichard, CEO of Metrolinx that in light of the many concerns expressed at our meeting, we must take immediate action to resolve this issue;

2) I requested that a meeting be arranged at the earliest possible date that would include the CEO of Metrolinx, the Chair of York Region, and representatives of GO and YRT/VIVA.

3) I spoke with Chair of York Region, Bill Fisch who agreed to the urgency of resolving this issue and will cooperate fully with the scheduling of a meeting.

4) I am convinced following last night's meeting that the proposed cancellation of the GO routes must be stopped. It is my opinion that YRT/VIVA does not have the capacity or ability at this time to assume the responsibilities of delivering the services currently being provided by GO Transit.

I will keep you apprised of developments.

March 2 2010 : Proposed transfer of the 62 Newmarket B GO Bus Service and 64 Newmarket York University to the

      YRT/VIVA routes 98/99 with a TTC connection

MEDIA ADVISORY

(Newmarket-Aurora)  Newmarket-Aurora MPP Frank Klees will be hosting a Town Hall Meeting to address the proposed cancellation of two GO Bus service routes serving Newmarket and Aurora, and transferring the routes to YRT’s VIVA.

The meeting is being organized by Klees in response to concerns that the changes will increase the cost and travel time for commuters.

The two routes affected are the 62 Newmarket B GO Bus service between Newmarket and York Mills, and the 64 Newmarket York U GO Bus to York University.

“I’m hopeful that this meeting will clarify the proposed changes and reassure commuters that any changes to transit services will neither increase costs nor add to the commute time,” said Klees. “If that is not the case, I expect that both GO Transit and YRT will revisit their plans.”

Date:                       Tuesday, March 9, 2010

Time:                       7:00 pm

Location:                 Aurora Town Hall, Holland Room

                                1 Municipal Drive, Aurora

                              (directions: Wellington St E, north on John West Way to Municipal Drive, town hall is on the left)

Representatives from GO Transit and YRT have been invited to attend the meeting to explain the changes and how they will affect commuters.
