KLEES:  Only Public Inquiry Can Restore Public Confidence

(QUEEN’S PARK)  Newmarket-Aurora MPP Frank Klees, the PC Critic for Transportation and Public Infrastructure Renewal today asked Deputy Premier and Infrastructure Minister George Smitherman to support the call for a public inquiry into his role in the billion-dollar E-Health scandal.

Klees pointed out that while he was Health Minister, Smitherman was responsible for about 80% of the scandalous E-Health spending and questioned how Smitherman can expect the public to have confidence in his ability to oversee an additional half a billion dollars of the public’s money, when questions remain unanswered about his role at E-Health.

Klees was referring to the additional funding allocated to Smitherman’s Infrastructure ministry in last week’s Financial Statement.

“Ontario taxpayers are concerned that the same minister who mishandled a billion dollars of E-Health Spending will now be given a further $500 million of their money for infrastructure projects,” Klees said.  “Ontarians deserve answers, and only a public inquiry can provide them.”

Klees asked Smitherman if he would support a public inquiry and if not, why not?

Smitherman refused to answer the question.

“The public will draw its own conclusion about why this government wants to hide the facts,” said Klees.
