Bill 13 Accepting Schools Act update May 3, 2012

Thank you for taking the time to contact my office regarding anti-bullying legislation.

I wanted to inform you that Bill’s 13 and 14 are scheduled for public hearings in the Social Policy Committee at Queen’s Park on Monday, May 7; Tuesday, May 8; Monday, May 14; and Tuesday, May 15, 2012, as well as in Ottawa during the week of May 21, 2012.   If you would like to present to the Standing Committee on Social Policy, please contact the Clerk of the Committee, Katch Koch at 416-325-3526 or email him at  Public delegation slots will quickly fill up, so I urge you to make arrangements immediately.

You are likely aware that Bill 14 briefly died on the order paper as a result of Elizabeth Witmer’s retirement from Queen’s Park, however I am pleased to inform you that earlier today the House voted unanimously to transfer Bill 14 into my colleague Lisa MacLeod's name from Mrs. Witmer's and has opened a process by which we can pursue substantive amendments to Bill 13 while averting a closure motion which had been intended for today.

I did vote against Bill 13 at second reading given the Liberal Bill does not offer the same level of protection for bullied students or rehabilitation for bullies themselves.  I stand behind Bill 14 and will work to improve Bill 13 at Social Policy Committee.  I and my caucus colleagues will offer serious and substantive amendments to Bill 13 and will work hard to ensure the right anti-bullying bill passes at Queen’s Park.
